San Diego's CrossFit gyms cater to diverse fitness levels, providing scalable workouts that challenge everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes. Functional Fitness for Real-World Applications

CrossFit's emphasis on functional movements makes it a powerful tool for enhancing everyday activities. The workouts are designed to improve your ability to perform tasks in your daily life more efficiently and with reduced risk of injury. San Diego residents, who often lead active lifestyles, appreciate the real-world applicability of CrossFit, which translates into improved performance in activities ranging from surfing at Pacific Beach to hiking in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

Measurable Progress and Accountability

CrossFit is not just about breaking a sweat; it's about tracking your progress and celebrating achievements. The structured nature of CrossFit workouts allows for measurable improvements in strength, endurance, and overall fitness. At Stay Classy CrossFit in Logan Heights, where goals are set high and achievement is celebrated, CrossFit provides a platform for individuals to see tangible results and stay accountable to their health and fitness goals.

Consistency is Key

“Consistency is Key”

Whether you're a seasoned CrossFitter or just beginning your fitness journey, one key principle stands tall amidst the sea of workout options: consistency. In the realm of CrossFit, where functional fitness reigns supreme, unlocking your true potential requires commitment and a steadfast dedication to your workout routine.

The Power of Three:

In the heart of San Diego's fitness community, Stay Classy CrossFit has emerged as a powerhouse of functional fitness. While the intensity of CrossFit workouts is well-known, it's the frequency that truly propels you towards your fitness goals. Working out three times a week is not just a recommendation; it's a key factor in maximizing your gains.

  • Optimizing Recovery:

  • CrossFit workouts challenge your body, pushing it to new limits with every WOD (Workout of the Day). However, recovery is where the magic happens. Training three times a week allows your body the essential time it needs to recover, repair, and grow stronger. Overtraining can lead to burnout and increased risk of injury, hindering your progress.

  • Consistency Breeds Results:

  • Consistency is the secret sauce in any fitness journey. When you commit to three CrossFit sessions per week, you create a sustainable routine. This regularity ensures that you continuously challenge your body, adapting to the demands of functional movements, and making steady progress towards your fitness goals.

  • Balancing Intensity and Rest:

  • CrossFit is known for its high-intensity workouts, but balance is key. Working out three times a week allows you to strike a harmonious balance between intense sessions and much-needed rest days. This equilibrium is crucial for preventing burnout and sustaining long-term progress.

Stay Classy CrossFit in San Diego, with its 10,000 sq. ft. of training space is the perfect starting point for your CrossFit journey.Stay Classy CrossFit boasts a supportive community that embraces both personal and group training. Whether you prefer the camaraderie of a group workout or the personalized attention of a personal trainer, Stay Classy has it all.

  • Group Training Dynamics:

  • Group training not only adds a social element to your workouts but also fuels your motivation. The energy of a CrossFit class at Stay Classy is infectious, pushing you to give your best in every rep. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals creates a supportive environment that propels everyone towards their fitness goals.

  • Personal Training Precision:

  • For those seeking a more personalized approach, Stay Classy CrossFit offers a plethora of skilled personal trainers. A tailored workout plan, focused on your individual strengths and areas for improvement, can fast-track your progress. Personal training ensures that every session is optimized for your unique fitness journey.

At Stay Classy CrossFIt, the path to excellence lies in the synergy of three: working out three times a week, staying consistent, and embracing the diversity of the fitness community. Remember, it's not just about the intensity of the workout; it's about the consistency of your commitment. So, lace up your Nanos, grab your wrist wraps, and let the journey to your fittest self begin!

Never Waste A Good Crisis

“Never Waste A Good Crisis”

Day 44 since we officially closed gym doors and transitioned online, but who’s counting!?  We flipped the switch in March, continued adapting through April, and here we are blooming into May awaiting official approval to be deemed “essential” enough as a business to carry on.  The National & Local Authorities have us re-opening in phases, all have been defined but are being redefined every few days or so and we are finding ourselves currently in Phase 1.  Here in California, our Governor has deemed “gyms” in Phase 3, yet murmurs of petitions may push us up the line since we are considered “semi-private” and “boutique” as opposed to Globo gym.  Regardless of the latest news report, we’re still in limbo and we’re dealing with it the best we can with a classyAF attitude.  Thank you to all who participated in our survey, it was great info. We’re taking all suggestions to heart as we build our standards for re-opening procedures to keep the health and wellness of our community at the forefront.

Globo Gym vs Average Joes

Globo Gym vs Average Joes

So many golden linings have emerged through this season.  There are a myriad of feats and people to give props and lift up praise to.  In no short order and I’m sure I’m going to miss some, here we go:

We’ve managed to hold strong at approx 80% of our paying members who are still contributing to keep the community alive.  We’ve come to realize the gym business will never be the same again.  So we’re adjusting best we can and right now every dollar counts.  This allows for all our coaches to be paid, rent is accounted for, and basic operational expenses handled to keep us afloat and together.  We are committed to re-opening and constantly improving on our service to the community.

Weekly Challenges may be the new norm at SCCF!  This past week’s Cooking Challenge was off the charts entertaining to witness.  Congrats to Quinn Moore our Classy Chopped Champion, German who gave him a run for his money, and the rest of the community for showing out them skills!  Let’s remember back to Week 1 and Asterios with a ridiculous affinity for death by lunges, squats and burpees! Week 2 went to Brandon with a super speedy, and legit, 150 burpees :) Greg with the creative cornhole board overhead squat won week 3. Week 4 was Linds with the 5 min + pringles and wine wall sit and then week 5 all the food took over the page! We’re in week 6 with the running challenge finishing this weekend with our 1st SCCF 5k & Beyond Run!  Thanks to Coach Alex (inspired by Sarah) to set it up!

What about all the home gym set ups now!  From backyards, to patios, to living rooms, to garages, and tiny hallways and stairways, we’ve seen some very creative set ups and it’s teaching us that we can do this anywhere.  And a must see is Dan and Mirna have recently built a beautiful home gym in their pool house and if you have no clue what I’m talking about, hop into a 5pm class and see it for yourself!

Props to Coach Garret for switching from a traditional CrossFit gym POV, to an online non-traditional Home version of CrossFit with and without weights programming cycle!  If it’s a mouthful to type, I can imagine it’s a mindful to deliver 2 types of programs for home athletes with all different kinds of set ups and gear.  We appreciate the extra effort Coach.

Big shoutout to Coach Rachel for coordinating the 95% of the gym that is rented out, managing the coaches schedule, setting up the Fiero Signature Meals on the weekly, researching best practices on new procedures and plans for the re-opening of the gym, and fostering a Frosted Faces pup named Snax aka Geoffrey aka Thor aka Pedro (who is cute and available for adoption).

Massive Praise to our Athlete/ Community member of the month: Diane Fernandez who is the most consistent and sometimes only 8am-er in the game and also because of a special contribution to sponsor other Athletes/ Community members through this season.

Huge constant claps and a standing ovation for our Athletes/ Community that are in frontline jobs: Henry Little, Lloyd Reboton, Alex Chatfield, Ally Weir, Jessie Miraglia, Juan Flores, Anne Marie Pham, Heather Orcutt, and all their families, friends, and roommates who have to cater around their lives.  If you haven’t already heard the rumblings, at 8pm, flip a light switch, clap those hands, bang on some pots, honk your horn, or call out a battle cry as the city stands to recognize our front line.

Super gratitude to Jeff Zwally who is staying on top of any news regarding potential gym opening and best practices. He’s also running our social media content on Instagram with the assistance from Coach Nick in designing the daily posts.

Muchas gracias to Chris Sandoval and his ministry in directly helping local families in Barrio Logan with paper goods like towels, toilet paper, wipes and other essential items who are having a difficult time procuring that which is sold out at many markets and outlets.

Hi-Five to our online Coaches: Cesar, Shirlley, Garret, Nick, Mike, Alex, Sandy, Willian, Paul and Rachel who keep bringing guidance, consistency, and nurturing to our community.

Let’s sing the Happy Birthday song (how long you should wash your hands) to the May babies!

Kudos and Claps to our SCCF Anniversaries in May:

Jaime “The Nice Guy” Casteneda - 1 Year

Sean “Oi” Brady - 1 Year

Dan “The Quiet Assassin” Arenas - 1 Year

Mirna “The Mamba Momma” Arenas - Year

This is just a sample of the type of community we are in action and truth.  The golden lining is the humanity in this community and our desire to support one another.  For those of you we didn’t mention above, we see you and we’re thinking about you too.

With all that is behind us now and an abundance of opportunity ahead, we are certain that when we re-open, we’ll be better because of this.  We may not be able to lift the same weights as when we left or have the same kind of lungs but we will gain that back and then some with time and more so be a stronger, tighter, and more integrated community.  Thank you community for who you have been for each other through this crisis, may we care even more and dare more boldly.

Always,

LeeJ & Jeff and our SCCF Crew

PS If anyone needs toilet paper, we’ve got rolls that you can pick up on Sunday from 9:30am-10am, we got you!

One By One

A Beautiful Community card

A Beautiful Community card

It starts with one.

Each. Every. Whole. Unit. Sole.

All. Together. Community. Team.

Easter Sunday is a reminder in the western world of the risen One. The story that centers upon this idea that death comes to us all, even the “chosen one”, but ultimately not even death can defeat new life. In a phrase, victory over death and thus, Easter was originally born as a representation of a second coming, a new beginning.

In practice, many of us reserve this day for gatherings amongst our friends and family. This Sunday, however, because of the quarantine, it carries a much different tone in play. Less trips to the stores and we’ll find less presentations of human sized bunnies, less neon marshmallow candies on shelves, less decoration kits sold, less colorful eggs found in random places, and less people dressed up around town in their Sunday’s best. But that does not restrict or lessen this idea of the celebration of new life, not in the least.

New life is an opportunity for new meaning, new purpose, new perspective. The opportunity to be reborn is a chance for a reset, a mulligan, a letting go of burdens of the past. One step in front of the other, one moment until the next, one day at a time. I’m reminded on this day about the power of One.

This time in our lives, if any, is showcasing the impact of this essential truth. One person, one decision carries the potential of an outstanding result, one by one, the singular is absolutely connected to the whole.

We received a card in the mail this weekend. It was from one of us. It read:

“Thank you (SCCF). You have create a beautiful community. And you treat us members more like friends & family. It’s awesome.”

With the card was a gift with the message “Stronger Together” and this most especially in this time rings ever true. And so, happy Easter to all, and we shall get through this side by side and rise as One.

Always,

LeeJ

New Normal

IMG_4148.JPG

Last week was a tunnel of change. To provide an overall outlook at our gym profile, we had approximately 20% of athletes hold/cancel their membership and 80% of athletes retaining a membership. The gym is about 85% rented of any/ all moveable equipment. We’ve applied for government financial assistance, spoken to our landlord about rent support, and are in flow for the month of April.

Our neighborhood gym, in line with the city of San Diego, in line with the state of California, in line with the United States of America, in line with a majority of the modern world is still holding our breath wondering: how many more positive today, how many more deaths, when will a cure come, what do I do if/ when it hits me?

The news we receive, depending on where your attention is aimed, is a balanced set from mass media new outlets to personal social media updates. Few facts change from a day to day basis outside this “new normal” that cases continue to rise, our healthcare system is overwhelmed and under resourced, our economy is tanking to levels compared to The Great Depression, and “they” say the worse is yet to come. On the opposite spectrum, opinions and stories of how this is affecting and who it is impacting gets closer and closer to home if it already hasn’t landed in your household. The forecast, unpredictable with a heavy chance of the same.

As sobering and anxious as the season calls for, we are not denied hope. Stay Home is the mandate, it’s the “new normal”. Thus, we are offered an opportunity to contain. We are afforded “new time” that we didn’t account for before. Though some of our lives may feel busier because of the moves we’ve been forced to make, once we realize “new routine” within this new context of living, we will begin to look at the lives we lived and the lives we seek to pursue with new lenses. New, new, new… That’s the current hope and the question that burns is what will you do with new?

When I think about the gym, the first things that come to mind are the people. The place, the space, and the equipment within it hover my radar, but the central nucleus of thought, feeling, memory, and wonder are about the individuals. The faces, the daily interactions, the mannerisms, the style, the routine of how we show up and leave… That’s what I miss most, the energy of the people in the space and the impression each individual makes at SCCF. The irony of energy and how we come to a space to spend it, yet the most impactful piece of the formula is just showing up and being yourself.

Always,

LeeJ

"What Happens To My Membership?"

SCCF Athletic Family,

“What Happens To My Membership?”

April 1st is in a short few days.  For the past week we’ve been intensely researching, listening, and discussing within SCCF leadership around the topic of memberships.  Because CrossFit is not a franchised business model, each ownership group is allowed to run their business in the best way they see fit for their community.  For the most part, globally, of the 15,000+ CrossFit Affiliates around the world, every single one has felt the impact of this virus. The stories I have read are: there are a small percentage that still have their physical doors open overseas and just preparing for their authorities to lock them down, some affiliates have closed completely and likely will never re-open, while a vast majority of others have turned to hybrid models like we are practicing with an online focus, equipment rentals, and trusting we can survive this downturn.

The original SD City mandates for gym closure was issued through the end of March, but due to the still growing cases of Covid 19, it’s clear to us that we won’t be opening our doors on April 1st with no certainty of when we will be allowed to show up at the gym together again.  We obviously hope it’s sooner than later, but to be honest, our primary concern is on the slowing the spread of the virus, making sure our community and its extended circle are safe and optimally healthy. Community wellbeing means more now than any other time in our short history.  We wish we could provide a more concrete outlook on when doors will open, but it’s all hearsay for now.

That being understood, in order to survive, we have to pivot and create a new business model that supports our community lifelines yet honors the values and principles that we stand for.  SCCF was built on being an approachable, accessible, and affordable space for its community to grow. With this transition, and with all the research and reflection we’ve invested into the core question above, we wanted to provide our solutions.  But before we jump into the offerings, just some context on how we came to our Interim Membership model.

We’ve looked and listened to industry leaders like Ben Bergeron out in Boston, Jason Khalipa with NCFit, Chris Cooper with Two Brain Business who mentors thousands of gyms worldwide, and are active in “Gym Owners United” (A Facebook Group of CF Affiliates) to best understand the lay of the land of how Affiliate owners like us are taking on this most critical question.  We needed to take a hard look at our current business and do what we discerned is most reasonable, fair, and just felt right by OUR people to guide OUR path forward. We want to look at this defining moment in 5 years and say: We did the right thing and our people at that time were given the best choices and chances to stay connected. Every gym will have their take on what’s important and how they handle this time and we are confident with our Interim Membership model.  What we are proposing is what we think are the best thought out practices, mixed with our own unique value propositions because we believe, not all communities are alike, and if you’ve been with us long enough to know, Stay Classy CrossFit is just different… our strength and identity is in our community.

Our intention first and foremost is to consistently overdeliver opportunities for the SCCF community’s highest wellbeing.  If you’re a part of our culture, we’re going to protect and provide for you like family, and do our best to go above and beyond in what we give you.  Thus, our greatest value comes from being and staying connected. We also believe that each of you value this experience, this practice, our coaches, and this community and will do your best to stand with us and contribute where you can.  All in all, we will find our way.

Tomorrow, Monday at 8pm, I’ll be hosting a Facebook Live session on our SCCF members page to review this information and answer any questions.

There is no roadmap for what we are dealing with and we can only hope this detour with the Interim Membership model, with a majority of buy-in from our community allows SCCF to stay alive during and after this season.  We’re also exploring government assistance programs, but we’re choosing not to lean it all on that type of support in full because the time it takes for approval and we believe there are other struggling businesses that may not have the strength of a community like ours and need that specific type of support to even have a fighting chance to stay alive as well.  Thus, we have our duty to our community first, yet we also want to be the best stewards to our neighbors at large. Our sincere hope is that a majority of our athletes select the “Stay Classy, Stay Alive” option, yet in all reality, that may not be the case. We know some people are out of jobs, took pay cuts, are in limbo, have to reallocate funds in this time, etc.  For those of you going through tough times and who want to stay connected, let us know. We also know, there are some of you that have resources and perhaps that are willing to step up and provide more, if so, equally let us know. Every athlete counts. This is such a vulnerable and unpredictable time, yet we are going to continue to do our best to keep this community together, safe, and strong.

Dare More Boldly,

LeeJ, Jeff, Rachel and the SCCF Coaches

Strong, Evergreen, and Classy

Screen Shot 2020-03-27 at 12.03.01 PM.png

Today marks our 1st full week through the transition.

Some highlights:

  • The gym has never been cleaner ;)

  • We have an average of about 2 dozen plus athletes working out in our online group classes on a daily basis.

  • We have about 50 athletes renting equipment from the gym so a physical piece of us is with you everyday

  • We’ve come together with an online Happy Hour

  • We’ve secretly ran a speakeasy Soulversational cocktail hour

  • We’ve caught up with friends off in Italy, Virginia, and Oceanside along with some morning coffee

  • We’ve ran more mileage on foot than we ever had within a weeks time

  • We’ve seen no positive cases or any symptoms of Covid-19 within our community, so we’re staying safe, staying healthy, staying strong, and staying classy

This week’s news on the virus is that on Wednesday, we saw the nation’s highest death toll come across the media wire. On Thursday, our local government issued that there is an economic stimulus for small businesses, on a first come first serve basis, however we are not sure if we will quality or get chosen for support, but we will apply. As of today, the initial mandate to keep our facility closed through the end of the month is beginning to look like this lockdown will extend into April and possibly/ likely even beyond that.

From the business side, we’re already experiencing and continuing to expect getting punched in the gut with this economic downturn. Right now, we’re still standing, and while we’re aggressively looking at costs to cut, we will continue to do our best to keep the coaches and community together and protected best we can. With the outlook of these circumstances bleeding into April, we are seeking council and fine tuning our solutions to “What happens to my membership if the gym is still closed?” question that some of us are asking. We will present a new membership plan this weekend and just know we are seeking what is most right, fair, and reasonable during these unprecedented times. One thing is for sure, we’ll keep doing our best to earn the value to be a priority in your life, and we’ll need the reciprocal support of the community to weather through this season.

I’ve been enjoying this opportunity to share on a regular basis with our audience. I honestly don’t know who is reading this, but if you are, thank you for your time and attention. I hope these updates and these words provide a window into what an absolute labor of love this dream and this community are to so many of us. May we be strong, evergreen, and classy for the rest of our days.

Dare More Boldly

Always,

LeeJ

Starting the Conversation

Screen Shot 2020-03-26 at 8.45.57 AM.png

Community has been on the mind a lot as of late. What does is mean to help? What does it mean to support? How can we be better as a community for one another in this time? Who’s going through this alone physically? Who’s going through this alone mentally? Who from our people are on the front lines daily and how can we let them know we are behind them? How can we be there for the community?

Questions need answers. Answers aren’t always clear but we have to start somewhere. And conversations count for something. So last evening we tried out a speakeasy cocktail hour and this morning we had coffee together… just trying with starting the conversations. We hope it helps. We hope it supports. We’ll keep trying.

The coffee & classy catch up this morning reminded me how many people in our community are directly on the front lines. To our first responders specifically within our community and everyone that we don’t have a pulse on but a beating heart for that are daily potentially exposing themselves to the virus and still showing up to work: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Stay Safe, Stay Home, and Stay Classy everyone.

Always,

The virus is becoming more aggressive around our local county. The mandate now is to only leave your home for essential needs or for an essential job. With the tighter measures on the quarantine, we will be needing new ways to stay even more connected.

We’re planning some special remote community activations beginning this week and running through the indefinite window of this sequester. We’ll create outlets for more conversations and connections to happen for our people. We hope you’ll join us.

Collective Consciousness

Screen Shot 2020-03-24 at 7.40.27 AM.png

I heard this term yesterday on an interview on sense making of what’s been going on in the world and this term: Collective Consciousness resonated. The affects of Covid19 have jolted us together in a way only this could have. The world and our neighborhoods have a focus, and it’s not competition, it’s a shared discipline with a reminder that, this is happening for us, not to us. Let’s continue to take care of one another by taking the necessary measures to stay physically at distance, yet spiritually connected.

Lockdown Weekend Day 2-3

WOD 3/23/20

Screen Shot 2020-03-23 at 11.33.31 AM.png

California lockdown weekend #1 has officially passed.

Friday Night Lights took on a whole new form. We had an online happy hour byob. For time: 135 minutes.

Saturday started with Barbell then Community Class.

Sunday we passed out toilet paper, equipment rentals, and some Fierro Meals at the gym for an hour.

The sun came out this weekend, we hope people got some time outside for a walk, for a workout, for some quality time taking in the birds singing.

Some things we’re thinking about and working on this week:

  • Weekly Challenges. The 1st one is up and offered by Coach Rachel.

  • Taking a look at how personal engagement is coming along as well as the online group classes and how we can improve those modes of communication and connection.

  • Having a talk with our Landlord to see if we can get some assistance/ support on rent as this quarantine season is potentially looking to continue into April

  • Thinking about how we can help especially those that have hit hard financial circumstances due to the extreme and rapid layoffs happening in our community.

  • Genuinely wondering how everyone is doing mentally through these socially isolated times and how we can be there to uplift the well being of our people.

  • Daily monitoring the Covid19 cases and guidelines, hoping for progress.

In this time more than ever, I’ve found so much pride to be a part of this group. It’s so clear how different we are in walks of life, where we’re from, and how we even got here, yet also unveiling in how fortunate we are to share the story of how we are dealing and where we are going together. It completely broadens my understanding of what we’re building despite the barriers of physical gathering. Thanks for reading these posts, feel free to comment on anything, we’d love to hear from you too.

Always,

New SCCF Who Dis!? DAY 1

WOD 3/20/20

Screen Shot 2020-03-19 at 9.03.35 PM.png
Screen Shot 2020-03-19 at 9.03.44 PM.png

Day 1 of SCCF Online was LITTY!!!

They day started with clouds and raining, at 5am and 6am, Coach Garret took the helm to an audience of none…

We learned quickly that maybe we need to apply, less is more. Less classes might pump up the volume in athletes in the sessions. So we immediately put up a poll and asked the community what are the best times to gather if they were to join an online class. We voted and we created a new class schedule we will implement tomorrow, Friday, Day 2 of the SD quarantine.

Governor Newsom just announced a few hours ago that California is “on lockdown”. The numbers and predictions of the severity of the virus are still alarming. They are saying that 56% of Californians could get the virus, that’s a total of 25.5 million people. Hard to say how strict the measures will be with going out in public, so the stay home, stay healthy, and stay classy message is very genuine.

As the afternoon and evening classes hit, more solid numbers showed up online and the vibes were back in classy form. Tomorrow, we forecast more laughs, sweat, and good times. We’re going to try a new online Happy Hour BYOB at 7pm, I can already guarantee it’ll be better than anything on Netflix.

Here’s the schedule for FRIYAY and if it flows well, we’ll likely keep the format for the following week.

FRIYAY New Online Class Schedule:

8am Stay Classy-fied PowerHour

12noon Stay Classy-fied PowerHour

Some SCCF news from today:

_.An anonymous member has volunteered to pay for another member that can’t afford/ cancels their membership for financial difficulty. Classy move.

_.If anyone wants to foster a dog, we can refer you to some dogs needing a home temporarily.

_.We’ll be working with Servants Church, a local Barrio Logan church led by Pastor & SCCF Athlete Chris Sandoval on a handful of different initiatives to support his community of families in the neighborhood. Starting with a goods drive of toilet paper, paper towels & paper napkins starting immediately and then an Easter Egg Hunt Home Kits donation for the families here in Logan.

Let us know if there is anything we can do to better serve y’all in the midst of this. We’re thinking of you all and please check back here on a daily basis for what’s good in the SCCF hood.

Dear SCCF,

I need a drink. Ayyyeee!

These past weeks and most especially the past 72+ hours have been a real life scene from the movie Inception.

v1.bTsxMTE2NjcyNTtqOzE4NDQ0OzEyMDA7ODAwOzEyMDA.jpeg

A dream within a dream trying to stay woke under circumstances and at a day of age where on one hand we are the most accessible to knowledge generation ever, yet on the other hand we are forced to answer the questions of how we will survive and take care of one another in the most unknowable global pandemics this generation has ever faced.

Reality.  Humanity is changing by the hour, the deaths are trending up every day, and despite months of testing and trying, there is still no cure or full close count of how many of us are potentially positive cases housing the coronavirus.  We have yet to climb to the peak and see the other side of this COVID19 pandemic, but we still must have faith in the horizon. There is a new normal with each passing day and as the world braces and responds to our national, state, and local guidelines we must play our part in meta-narrative.

Zoom in to San Diego, focus closer on where we live in our surrounding neighborhoods, and we find ourselves in the gray.  We have this freedom to still walk the edge of the line of gathering in small groups of less than 10 people, physically practicing #socialdistancing like it was a 6ft distanced cotillion dance, and taking on OCD mannerisms in our cleanliness and sanitation.  We begin to second guess our conscious actions when we see one another and we’re quick to forgiveness when our unconscious actions cross this ever moving boundary between us. With so many questions personally, collectively, and globally, we hope SCCF can be a light and compass to that new horizon.

In light of multiple ongoing communications and meetings from our leadership crew here at SCCF, listening to our athletes in and out of class, we feel like we’ve exercised our liberties to the max given present circumstances.  We gave the in-gym thing a run for the past few days in our best judgement to keep the gym open. We knew it was a risk, but we needed to know how it was received, how it felt, and what we would find. We’re reporting that though the daily turnout was a solid 75% of what we typically experience, that we kept in line with class caps, and that the gym has never been cleaner, the vibe was tremendously different as a whole.  Coaches aren’t comfortable to coach at their best, athletes are limiting their potential in the space because of new rules we put in place, and the community was more “hi and bye” than “how are you”. I’m glad we tried in-gym and we’re better for what it taught us as we leaned in together on this lesson of the way forward.

(Update 5pm PST: In light of composing this letter, we just got news that by order of the city of San Diego, we must now close all gyms and fitness centers by midnight tonight. Our timing is truly impeccable…)

It’s time for another pivot.

The gym facility is closing, but the coaching and community STAY open. For those that have been around for a few years you know, this isn’t the first time we’ve faced the adversity to abruptly shut the doors. In 2015 we had 5 days to move, 2017 we had a night to move, and in 2019 we had a month to move. And with every migration, we’ve managed to serendipitously find a home within walking distance and we grew. Not only did we grow in number but more importantly deeper in relationship.  The challenge is same in nature, different with what we’re up against. This time, it is not so much about the transition of the gym as an address, it’s about our people and their transition in life moving forward.

We want you to know, no matter what, we hear you and we want to be here for you.  We know some of you look to us for your daily outlet/ personal improvement/ stress relief/ time to yourself/ shared passion with your partner/ excuse to cross-eat and cross-drink/ etc.  That doesn’t change. However, with the quarantine measures, we understand some of you you may be going through immediate financial hardship as well. Whatever you’re going through, we’ll be open for you.  We want you to know, SCCF was never about the commerce, it’s always been about culture and community. We are about being a safe place regardless of address, we are about being better everyday as a human and a people, and we are about being a vibe.  That’s the value, that’s what we’ve invested in, that’s where your hard earned money goes to. Whatever happens from here is in the hands and the hearts of our people, and we want it forever to be this way.

Transparently and financially speaking, we run a very lean business. Our main costs are taking care of our coaches, rent, and reinvesting into our facility. We want you to know we are committed to keeping all our coaches paid through this time.  We’re not sure how pliable our landlord will be, but we’re going to be asking for support with rent. We’ll also use this time to work on some improvements at the gym. Outside of that, though it may sound like a time to “tighten”, we’ve always done our best to be available and willing to charitably help with our regional community. We will continue to be of service and support to the people of Barrio Logan and San Diego wide.

The Way Forward through the end of March.

Effective immediately and for through the end of the month of March, from the comfort of your home, we will transition to: Custom At-Home “The Stay Classy-fied PowerHour” Programming, Online Group Classes, 1-on-1 Coaching, Equipment Loans, Nutrition Education Emphasis, FB Cell Groups, and SCCF Online Meet Ups.

These are not phone calls or FaceTime conversations, just quick hit accountability for every soul active within our community.

Equipment Loans:

We are loaning out single Dumbbells, Kettlebells, or Bumper Plates of your choice to each member.  If you need a jump rope, a med ball, ab mat, PVC pipe, band, roller, barbell, box, bikes, rowers, squat stands, yoke, sand bags, bench, etc. You’ll sign a loan document, take immaculate care of our community’s equipment, and that’s it.  You can come by today, Wednesday from 3pm-8pm, Thursday from 9am-11am and 4pm-6pm, and Friday TBD.

Nutrition Education Emphasis:

Stay Classy WAG is sending a few emails per week which will include recipes, productivity tips, etc.

Also, Stay Classy WAG has 15 max spots available to have an in-depth dedicated nutrition coach.  The cost is at their introductory rate of $60/ month with no commitments. In addition, @stayclassywag on Instagram will be posting daily content to help curb your way to more nutrition knowledge.  Feel free to reach out to Coach Alex or Sarah R. for more information.

FB Cell Groups:

Each coach is going to create a smaller Facebook Cell Group for their athletes.  The purpose here is to have a space for tighter communication and connection.

Dare More Boldly

In the abyss of unpredictability due to COVID19, we still have vision that the opportunities are abundant.  This next chapter of SCCF is a deeper dive into what our culture and community is when we find ourselves “outside the box”.  We have an opportunity to become a more digitally present and online connected community. We have an opportunity to take a more holistic approach to well-being.  We have an opportunity to embark on even more personal attention between coaches and our athletes. And we have an opportunity to create new surprises for our community.  We look forward to turning the page together on this next story of SCCF and bringing all these lessons back to our gym home sooner than later.

Stay well, stay home, and stay classy.

Always,

LeeJ
