“Never Waste A Good Crisis”

Day 44 since we officially closed gym doors and transitioned online, but who’s counting!?  We flipped the switch in March, continued adapting through April, and here we are blooming into May awaiting official approval to be deemed “essential” enough as a business to carry on.  The National & Local Authorities have us re-opening in phases, all have been defined but are being redefined every few days or so and we are finding ourselves currently in Phase 1.  Here in California, our Governor has deemed “gyms” in Phase 3, yet murmurs of petitions may push us up the line since we are considered “semi-private” and “boutique” as opposed to Globo gym.  Regardless of the latest news report, we’re still in limbo and we’re dealing with it the best we can with a classyAF attitude.  Thank you to all who participated in our survey, it was great info. We’re taking all suggestions to heart as we build our standards for re-opening procedures to keep the health and wellness of our community at the forefront.

So many golden linings have emerged through this season.  There are a myriad of feats and people to give props and lift up praise to.  In no short order and I’m sure I’m going to miss some, here we go:

We’ve managed to hold strong at approx 80% of our paying members who are still contributing to keep the community alive.  We’ve come to realize the gym business will never be the same again.  So we’re adjusting best we can and right now every dollar counts.  This allows for all our coaches to be paid, rent is accounted for, and basic operational expenses handled to keep us afloat and together.  We are committed to re-opening and constantly improving on our service to the community.

Weekly Challenges may be the new norm at SCCF!  This past week’s Cooking Challenge was off the charts entertaining to witness.  Congrats to Quinn Moore our Classy Chopped Champion, German who gave him a run for his money, and the rest of the community for showing out them skills!  Let’s remember back to Week 1 and Asterios with a ridiculous affinity for death by lunges, squats and burpees! Week 2 went to Brandon with a super speedy, and legit, 150 burpees :) Greg with the creative cornhole board overhead squat won week 3. Week 4 was Linds with the 5 min + pringles and wine wall sit and then week 5 all the food took over the page! We’re in week 6 with the running challenge finishing this weekend with our 1st SCCF 5k & Beyond Run!  Thanks to Coach Alex (inspired by Sarah) to set it up!

What about all the home gym set ups now!  From backyards, to patios, to living rooms, to garages, and tiny hallways and stairways, we’ve seen some very creative set ups and it’s teaching us that we can do this anywhere.  And a must see is Dan and Mirna have recently built a beautiful home gym in their pool house and if you have no clue what I’m talking about, hop into a 5pm class and see it for yourself!

Props to Coach Garret for switching from a traditional CrossFit gym POV, to an online non-traditional Home version of CrossFit with and without weights programming cycle!  If it’s a mouthful to type, I can imagine it’s a mindful to deliver 2 types of programs for home athletes with all different kinds of set ups and gear.  We appreciate the extra effort Coach.

Big shoutout to Coach Rachel for coordinating the 95% of the gym that is rented out, managing the coaches schedule, setting up the Fiero Signature Meals on the weekly, researching best practices on new procedures and plans for the re-opening of the gym, and fostering a Frosted Faces pup named Snax aka Geoffrey aka Thor aka Pedro (who is cute and available for adoption).

Massive Praise to our Athlete/ Community member of the month: Diane Fernandez who is the most consistent and sometimes only 8am-er in the game and also because of a special contribution to sponsor other Athletes/ Community members through this season.

Huge constant claps and a standing ovation for our Athletes/ Community that are in frontline jobs: Henry Little, Lloyd Reboton, Alex Chatfield, Ally Weir, Jessie Miraglia, Juan Flores, Anne Marie Pham, Heather Orcutt, and all their families, friends, and roommates who have to cater around their lives.  If you haven’t already heard the rumblings, at 8pm, flip a light switch, clap those hands, bang on some pots, honk your horn, or call out a battle cry as the city stands to recognize our front line.

Super gratitude to Jeff Zwally who is staying on top of any news regarding potential gym opening and best practices. He’s also running our social media content on Instagram with the assistance from Coach Nick in designing the daily posts.

This is just a sample of the type of community we are in action and truth.  The golden lining is the humanity in this community and our desire to support one another.  For those of you we didn’t mention above, we see you and we’re thinking about you too.

With all that is behind us now and an abundance of opportunity ahead, we are certain that when we re-open, we’ll be better because of this.  We may not be able to lift the same weights as when we left or have the same kind of lungs but we will gain that back and then some with time and more so be a stronger, tighter, and more integrated community.  Thank you community for who you have been for each other through this crisis, may we care even more and dare more boldly.

Always,

LeeJ & Jeff and our SCCF Crew

PS If anyone needs toilet paper, we’ve got rolls that you can pick up on Sunday from 9:30am-10am, we got you!
